There has been something new in the works over here this past year. Jon has been working on a new business late at night after he is done helping me with One Love Photo. It’s been inspiring to watch him develop his ideas and create Mod Radio. Jon’s radios are updated vintage radios with new speakers, amps and MP3 jacks. The process starts with a hunt at antique shops for the perfect radio in need of some TLC. Once found the radio is stripped down to it’s shell, the outside is buffed and sometimes given a fresh coat of paint. Inside he installs everything new from the amp, speaker wire, mp3 jack, power cord, led jewel light and retrofitted knobs. A back plate is custom cut to hold the brand new speakers. Careful care is considered to speaker placement to get the most sound out of each radio.

Jon has always had a “low-fidelity eye” preferring grainy blurry photographs over clean hi-fidelity images. In order to abstract the digital quality of his images when he first started photography he created his own set of homemade lenses to match our vintage aesthetic. He took a modern hi-fi digital camera and made it function like an old film camera. For Mod Radio he is doing the exact same concept but completely opposite. With the digital camera he took something new and made it old. With Mod Radio he is taking something old and making it new again. Being a big fan of mid-century modern design he is drawn to the overall look of vintage tabletop radios, but being a musician he’s always been picky about sound quality. When his “low-fi eyes” combined with his “hi-fi ears” Mod Radio was born! Jon’s been juggling making new radios with designing a website. The website is up and looks amazing! In addition to the website, Mod Radios are also for sale at the Bellevue Arts Museum. This weekend we are heading down to a craft show in Portland called “Crafty Wonderland” to debut about 20 new radios! Please check out the website www.ModRadio.com. We’ve been enjoying a nice slow month at home. We finally found the time and gumption to paint our living and dining rooms white. We’ve been enjoying our free weekends wandering antique stores from Olympia to Bremerton. Coincidentally one of our favorite treasure troves called Rampizi is located right here in Tacoma on Antique Row. The trouble is that this place is rarely open and when it is open we are almost always working. What a treat it was to find ourselves up in Rampizi on a Saturday evening admiring the goods while David the owner serenaded us on his hodgepodge drum set. We loaded our station wagon with a mid century buffet, Italian side table and a fun piece of beatnik art to finish off our room re-do. I found this great article in the Tacoma Weekly that describes the magic of Rampizi. While perusing the shop I thought fondly of Sarah and Rob’s wedding, our antique loving couple who were married right up the street in a Tacoma warehouse last summer.

Sarah and Rob created, planned and constructed almost everything in the warehouse space. Their friends and family also contributed in baking pies, making salsa, growing and arranging the flowers, plus setting up and breaking down the space. One of our favorite details were the handmade pallet dinner tables that Rob and Sarah’s dad constructed just for the wedding. We were lucky enough to be one of the recipients of a table after the wedding! We used our table for our display at the Seattle Wedding Show and now it’s found a home in our backyard. I can’t wait to host a summer dinner party centered around our Sarah and Rob “love table”. From Sarah, “I was a little surprised by how much work and time it takes to plan a wedding when you do it yourself. But it was a great gauge of how we will work together to create one cohesive experience”.

Right after their ceremony we wandered up into Rampizi for a few portraits with Sarah and Rob. It was one of my favorite portrait sessions ever, I could have stayed there forever. While we were snapping I noticed all of our eyes shifting and searching for a treasure. A true scavenger never rests! Sarah and Rob are our kind of people. They are creative folks, who love antiques and random collections, cats, succulents, vintage cars, tacos, handmade projects, re-purposed goods, globe lights and pie. And that’s what their wedding was all about!

We have had some of our best weddings during the month of March the past couple years. I’m happy to say that we’ve stayed in contact with all these sweet pairs who celebrated anniversaries this month. Robyn and John are celebrating two years of marriage today. Their wedding was down in Orange County, California. A few of our favorite moments from their wedding day was riding the ferris wheel at the Balboa fun zone. John buying strawberries and feeding Robyn a quick snack while we waited for the ferry. Getting wildblown on the tiny ferry from Balboa island to the Peninsula. We reconnected with Robyn and John this summer while they were vacationing with family on Oahu. We did a photo session with Robyn’s entire family on the beach. Below are a few favorite shots of just the two of them. We first met Robyn when she attended our photo workshop on Vashon Island. We met John for the first time on a rainy day in Portland when we shot their engagement session. Seeing the two of them together for the first time cuddling in the rain made us insanely excited for their wedding day. It was such a treat to photograph them again this summer, they are settling nicely into married life. John always encourages Robyn to follow her dreams and Robyn returns the same level of enthusiasm for John’s goals. They both love photography and just bought a new camera. Robyn is a blonde Julia Childs and recently started a food blog called the Freckled Pie. These two are going to do great things. Can’t help but wonder when our next photo session will be with them and what exciting things they will be up to….

Erin and Jeremy’s wedding at Union Hill Inn in Sonora California was pure magic. These two celebrated three years of marriage about a week ago. You can view the full blog post on their wedding here and watch their slideshow with music by Erin’s band Ivory Owl. Together they have lots of interests ranging from singing, guitar, photography, cooking and cat snuggling. I’m always impressed with the delicious vegan meals Erin posts on Instagram and I love the photos of their giant kitty Tony (one day I will pet him)! After their wedding they moved up to Portland but now they are back in Santa Cruz while Erin works on a Master’s Degree. Before they left the Northwest Jeremy came up for an all day photography mentoring session with us for his wedding photography business. During our time together it became obvious that Erin should pick up a camera and join Jeremy as his photo partner just like Jon did with me. At least that’s what I thought! Jeremy was thrilled with the suggestion and the two of them ran with it. Together they have impressed us with their determination and enthusiasm. With Erin’s vintage style they created an adorable booth at a wedding show this winter and Jeremy created a new website for their business Still Music Photography.

Renee and Josh had their wedding on Vieques Island in Puerto Rico at the stunning W hotel resort two years ago. We started photos in Isabel II the quaint town near the resort, then ventured uphill for a view of the island from the old fort. On our drive back to the W we just happened to spot horses running wild on a golden hillside. It was like a dream. You can view more photos from this special day on our blog post here or watch their slideshow. Since their wedding we have returned to Puerto Rico twice to photograph other weddings. We have a fourth Puerto Rico wedding coming up in May. Each time we visit we fall more and more in love.

Renee and Josh live in New York so we haven’t seen them since their wedding two years ago, but we hope to visit NYC within the year. Renee is a talented painter and recently set up an etsy shop to showcase her work. These two have some big excitement coming their way because they are expecting their first baby this year! I love it when I hear about our couple’s growing into families. It’s such a gift when we are able to capture the full circle and photograph them with their little ones. Best of luck to Renee and Josh as they venture into parenthood. What a lucky baby!

This is our cousin Michael and he is one of our favorite people. We were so excited to meet his new puppy when he came for a visit last weekend. There are so many things to love about Michael. He is an avid writer, filling pages upon pages with reckless abandon. You know how you buy yourself that really pretty journal with the handmade paper and then get so freaked out about the blank pages that you never write in it? Not Michael, he buys the prettiest journals he can and jumps right in, sometimes writing in them before he leaves the bookstore. He even sleeps with his journals. He always asks how you are doing and really listens to your answer. He is quick to give a compliment and an honest opinion. He sings fearlessly, out of the blue he will bust into song. He’ll grab you when you are least expecting it and spin you for a dance. He hugs his family all the time. His life is full of writing, singing, dancing and hugging; all that anyone could hope for. Now he has the cutest puppy on the planet on top of all that. But my favorite thing about Michael is that he calls me Feather, the best nickname anyone has ever given me.

A few images from Chris and Nina’s Oahu engagement session. We started in the heart of Honolulu and discovered that the holiday lanterns hanging outside the ‘Iolani Palace perfectly matched Nina’s amazing party dress! It was all so sweet that it made me think they should just switch gears and get married right then and there. But I didn’t want to get blamed for anyone else’s elopement (not sure if Jon’s Mom will ever forgive us for our wedding trick). After a bit, we headed into the hills above town to show them our favorite patch of trees and the always impressive Tantalus Drive view.

I’ve always envisioned attending a perfect winter wedding, much the same way I often dreamed of a white Christmas as a child. In my wedding dream I glided through the snow with all my cameras hanging perfectly around my neck looking as graceful as Nancy Kerrigan in white on Olympic ice. In reality I quickly discovered that my short legs and heavy camera bags were no match for the several feet of snow, falling face first in front of the entire wedding party. At the same time a rowdy rugrat from the sledding area tossed snowballs at my head. A little different from my fantasy, however snow makes everything more fun and I laughed more at this wedding than I can remember. Charlie Ann and Nate’s main goal was to embrace winter and to throw a super cozy Christmas Wedding party. From Charlie Ann “We wanted our wedding day to be a celebration, and that is exactly what it was! We were surrounded by all of our family and friends, with good food and good music in a beautiful setting. We couldn’t have asked for anything more, it was the perfect day!”

We both love wintertime and all that comes with it; fireplaces, warm drinks, beautiful mountains, snow covered tress, cozy snuggles. Our friendship started on several ski trips during high school. Skiing and hiking are some of our favorite things to do together. Swiftwater Cellars at Suncadia Resort offered a fantastic lodge and a beautiful backdrop that we simply couldn’t pass up!

For inspiration we found a few ideas on pinterest, but the wedding coordinator and florist at Swiftwater Cellars were our main source of inspiration. They were full of lovely ideas! My advice, don’t get too caught up in the details. Simply plan a day of celebration and love, and the rest will fall into place. In the end, the most important thing was also the most simple. We were standing together before God and all of our friends and family promising to love each other forever.

One of our favorite parts about the wedding was the food and drinks. We choose mainly Northwest cuisine and winter themed drinks. We were going for a winter wonderland vibe, and it all fell together beautifully! We absolutely loved the arch we stood under during the ceremony, it was made of tree branches, lights and little crystals to make it glimmer. Our florist Carol and the coordinator Leena did an amazing job giving us the look we wanted; a cozy, outdoorsy feel with lots and lots of light! Everything turned out beautifully!

The first week of February we took a whirlwind weekend trip to Puerto Rico and fit more into two days than I think we have milked since our college road trip days. We drove across the island in the middle of the night and woke up to a dream beach at the Villa Montana Resort in Isabela. First off we met Karla and Javier otherwise known as “the nicest people in the whole wide world”. Next Javier gave us a beach tour of his hometown to scout photo spots. The tour included sand dunes, gritty abandoned beach houses and my 1st Medalla, which I had before coffee (that’s a first). A barefoot bonfire beach party and more Medalla. Two visits to the gigantic blowhole down the road. An attack by the most aggressive fire ants in the world. Note to self, even if the angle is better on top of the ant hill, don’t stand on it. The funniest set of bridal crew photos ever. A ceremony completely in Spanish that took me right back to my summer in Mexico when I was 16. Dancing, dancing dancing! Observing the effects of multiple shots of coconut moonshine on gringos. A late night traditional Puerto Rican band which led the guests from one venue to the next. An impromptu dance parade with all the guests right in step. Then another bonfire, more dancing and moonshine.

weekend update: the perfect dress

This weekend we took the ferry to Whidbey Island for a perfect winter wedding getaway. Michelle and Charles were married in Langley at a sweet little church in the middle of town. They celebrated with family and friends at the incredibly charming and delicious Fireseed Garden. When we photograph couples I always feel like there are three characters to capture. The bride and groom of course and then there is the dress. The dress that the bride has meticulously thought about for months or even years. The dress that has driven her crazy at times when she wasn’t sure it was the “one”. The dress she has tried on at least twenty times. The dress that she may have had second thoughts about or needed to ask for outside approval from her mom and bridal brigade. The dress that everyone thinks is perfect for her and makes her feel beautiful and confident. Sounds a little like love and marriage doesn’t it? There was no doubt this weekend that Michelle had found not only the perfect man but the absolutely most perfect dress for her style and sensibility. We all agreed completely. To the point that I was wanted to rip that dress right off of her, squeeze myself into it with the help of several layers of spanxs and run down the aisle with Jon for our second wedding.
